Traditional Maritime Experience

€0.00

Step into the world of traditional wooden shipbuilding with a visit to the historic shipyard O Fouskis, where craftsmanship and heritage come alive. Established in 1952 by the legendary shipwright Giannis Zorzos—known as Mastro-Giannis—this family-run shipyard has been a cornerstone of Syros’ maritime tradition for decades.

From humble beginnings collecting wood scraps as a child, Mastro-Giannis built a legacy of expert ship construction and repair, crafting hundreds of wooden boats that sailed the Aegean.During this immersive experience, we will meet Captain Manolis, who has dedicated his life to restoring and replicating traditional Aegean vessels. As we explore the shipyard, we will hear firsthand accounts of the intricate repair process—how skilled hands carefully replace planks, reinforce aging hulls, and breathe new life into weathered boats.

Manolis’ dedication extends beyond physical restoration; he meticulously documents every detail, ensuring that the knowledge of wooden shipbuilding does not fade with time. His collection of handcrafted ship replicas and photographic records serves as a vital link to the past, safeguarding a craft that once thrived on these shores.Through stories, photographs, and the scent of fresh-cut timber, this visit is more than just a glimpse into a workshop—it is a tribute to the generations of shipwrights who shaped Syros’ seafaring legacy.

As the future of traditional shipbuilding faces uncertainty, the work of O Fouskis stands as a living testament to the resilience of craftsmanship and the enduring spirit of the island’s maritime heritage.
