Magusto Celebration: Embrace Autumn (Nov. 16)
November is the month when fall definitely arrives and as the days get colder, we’re in the mood for warmer traditions like the “Magusto”.
With its origins dating back to ancient rural times, Magusto marks the arrival of the chestnut harvest, one of the most emblematic fruits of autumn. The festivities take place throughout November, coinciding with the celebration of Saint Martinho, who became known for its generosity.
Families will be welcomed by our resident actors who recreate this traditional moment and represent the old caretakers of the “quintinha”. They will invite you and your children to take part in the kitchen chores, as you have to prepare the delicacies made with the harvested chestnuts.
By the wood-fired oven you will knead the dough for the “broas”, a bread with sweet-herbs, as the chestnuts roast on the embers. After the work is done, it’s time to enjoy this autumn typical food served with hot tea or lemonade while, in family, you enjoy an amusing puppet show that tells the legend of Saint Martinho.
The friendly donkey Jacó and the mare Helena, residents for many years, will also be there to greet everyone.
A little more About Quintinha:
Quintinha is an old agricultural property that supplied the kitchen of Monserrate palace with the most fresh vegetables and fruits, eggs and aromatic herbs. The green garden is still maintained, with ecological production of local varieties and traditional irrigation with small “levadas” that carry the water from an elevated tank. And of course the farm animals are present as well, the donkey and the horse, the chikens and the rabits. Today we welcome everyone who wants to learn about the ancient customs of this region.
