Explore Syros Hiking: Aerolithos & Lia Beach (Mar. 20)
For our last hike, we have decided to introduce you to one of the most unique geological spots of Greece and to visit a remote beach to enjoy some BBQ with a Syros local.
The Experience will start with a Hike to Aerolithos, to admire the beauty of this geological masterpiece. Then we will visit Lia Beach to rendezvous with Stratis, a descendant of one of the three families who own Apano Meria (the northern part of the island). Stratis owns a small house on Lia Beach where he lives during the summer. A few of us might have met him on Sirigas and Schizomenes Gorge hike at Sirigas Spring and he has offered to host a BBQ at Lia Beach, where we will eat and swim together, which is one of the things that Syros locals do a lot at this time of the year. He can't wait to meet everyone!
About Aerolithos:
As you already know Syros is a Geological Museum of invaluable scientific value and Aerolithos is a big part of it. Aerolithos is a fascinating natural phenomenon found in the rugged landscapes of northern Syros. While there has been speculation that it fell from space, expert research has determined that it is actually formed by the African plate sinking beneath the European plate. This sinking creates rocks known as eklogitis that have been brought to the surface over time.
Aerolithos is an impressive sight to behold, with its unique and varied hues of red, orange, yellow, and white making it stand out from the surrounding environment. Its jagged, occasional spires and uneven, hewn surface make it a spectacular and mysterious spectacle. It is believed to be millions of years old, and its appearance has been shaped over the years by erosion, wind, and rain.
It is a unique geological feature and has become an important part of Syros' history and culture. The legend of the Aerolithos has been told in many different forms throughout the years and it is a sight that continues to captivate and enthrall visitors. It is a reminder of the power of nature and a testament to the beauty of Syros' rugged and windswept landscapes.
