Explore Kotor Hike: Saint Giovanni Fort (Sept. 23)
Let’s embark on a journey to the majestic St. John’s Fortress in Kotor, Montenegro.
The fortress stands atop San Giovanni Hill (also known as St. John Hill), perched at an impressive 260 metres above sea level. You’ll be greeted by breathtaking vistas of the Old Town of Kotor and the Bay of Kotor—a photographer’s dream!
The Kotor Fortress itself is part of a mediaeval fortification system that encircles both the Kotor Old Town and the adjacent hillside. These fortifications include gates, bastions, towers, and defensive walls (ramparts). We will start off at the Education Centre and walk towards the Old Town of Kotor where our adventure begins.
Trail Length: The hike covers approximately 1.5 kilometres (one-way).
Steps: Brace yourself for 1,350 steps—a stairway to panoramic bliss!
Difficulty Level: moderate, this hike offers a rewarding challenge.
Duration: While the hike can be done in an hour, we will be pacing ourselves as we embark on our very first hike of any Kotor Cohort! We have added time at the end if anyone wishes to stay on and visit the Fortress. Please bring cash as the entrance fee of 15 Euros is not included. Alternatively you may want to finish with a lunch meet up after the hike, to be paid on your own account. We will leave this to the Community to decide on the day.
